Things to Consider while
designing a website

Several things to consider while designing a website are the following:

  • Domain name needs to accurately reflect your brand’s voice, it should be spelt simply and reflect your business to have a higher chance of being searched.

  • Chose a host. When choosing a host you need to think about what your website is designed for, if it will have lots of pictures and visuals, would you have technical support in-house, or do you need reliable, responsive support from your hosting provider, along with several other questions you'll need to ask yourself.

  • Define your purpose for the site and the target audience. Readers like a website that is designed and made for them. You'll want to research your target audience and know what they are looking for regarding products and services.

  • Your design, navigation, and content should be driven by a purpose that aligns with your audience and their goals.

  • Navigation should be easy and accessible, it will help give more exposure to your sites content. A well navigated site is respected by search engines also, because search engine crawlers can easily crawl a well navigated website. Consider the navigation of your website before having a finalized design for your website.

  • Use images, visuals and colour. Images speak more than text and a website with all text appears boring. You should choose a colour theme related to your brand so that your website can attract the customers with its looks also.
  •  Users are searching while on the go, so having your site should be mobile friendly.

  • Research other websites to get inspired.

  • Invest time. Make sure you devote enough time and energy into your website.

  • Be creative

  • Create a timeline with realistic deadlines.

  • Be flexible. A good website is constantly changing and adding new articles, and encourages feedback.

  • Check your competitor’s website so that you can have an idea what to do and what not to do? Check their sites thoroughly and make a list of things you like and things you didn’t like in their website. If you want to beat your competitors then you have to be the best in the every department.

  • Have a call to action. Placing calls to action on your website encourages customers to contact your business. A friendly suggestion, such as “Contact us today!” demonstrates that your business wants to develop a relationship with its customers. It’s important that calls to action are appropriate for a visitor’s level of engagement with your company. If they’re just discovering your brand, invite them to subscribe to your email newsletter.

  • Integrating with Social Media. As technology makes information sharing more convenient, businesses lacking social media integration fail to take advantage of what has been likened to modern day word-of-mouth advertising. Social media provides a venue in which customers can promote your brand, provide reviews, and stay in-the-know about your company’s latest news.
  • Make sure your website is secure.  With newer and greater risks of viruses and malware, website designers need to be careful, and must protect security breaches both  on the front end and behind the scenes of their site.
